Police, students differ in rape, robbery attack in UNIZIK hostels

…nine female students of the institution were reportedly raped while over seventeen others were injured during the attack

Controversies have greeted alleged rape and robbery attack in hostels housing students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Awka.

Some media outfits had reported that about nine female students of the institution were raped while over seventeen others were injured when gang of suspected armed robbers, numbering about twenty reportedly raided scores of the hostels located along Ifite road, Awka.

While the Police Command in the state described the report as mischievous, false and unconfirmed, the students of the institution raised the alarm over what they termed incessant robbery of students in their respective lodges on daily basis.

The Students Union Government, in a statement signed by its President, Comrade Charles Ijeomah, condemned the attacks, saying the students could not afford to lose any other student to such ugly incidence.

He urged the law enforcement agencies whose responsibility is to protect the lives and property of the citizens to urgently deploy their patrol team to the area to forestall further occurances.

He also urged the students to be calm and law abiding and refrain from any form of protest or demonstration, promising to inform them of next line of action in the event there expectations were not met.

But Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement insisted there was no such report/record as being peddled by some online media and national dailies.

He said the reports were targeted at causing tension and bringing the state to disrepute, warning peddlers to desist fortwith or would not be spared if apprehended.

The statement reads, “Anambra State Police Command wishes to state that there is no report/record as being peddled by some online media and national dailies tagged seventeen persons injured and nine female students rape in a hostel.

“Also, members of the public should be guided as serious cases of this nature should be reported to the closest police station than resorting to social media.

“This will enable the police to do preliminary findings before embarking on a proper investigations.
