In Anambra, the state police command has killed two alleged carjackers.
The suspects were also linked with the abduction of an engineer with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, last year.
It was gathered that duo engaged police personnel in a shootout for hours before they were eventually gunned down.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident.
He said the deceased, Onyebuchi Ngala and Izuchukwu Okoro, were shot dead during a gun battle with policemen near Nkwo Agulu in the Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.
He stated that the deceased were members of the gang responsible for the abduction of one Emeka Chiaghana, an engineer with UNIZIK, last October.
Mohammed stated, “Around 1.15pm, police operatives attached to the command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad responded to a distress call and stormed the hideout of a robbery gang, who allegedly attacked one Chiegulem Chidera at Agouye Umuko, Awka, and snatched his Nissan Xtera SUV with number plate Cross River GGJ 402 AA at gunpoint.
“The suspects were trailed to Nkwo Agulu and on sighting the police, opened fire on them, after which the police responded promptly.
“As a result, the two suspects, Onyebuchi Ngala, aka Ceaser, and Izuchukwu Okoro, were fatally wounded during the encounter.
“They were taken to hospital for treatment but were confirmed dead on arrival by the medical doctor.”
Mohammed said exhibits recovered from them included the Xtera SUV, one AK-47 rifle, one pump action gun, six life cartridges, four expended ammunition, five rounds of life ammunition of 7.62mm and two AK-47 magazines.”
Mohammed added that the case was being investigated, while efforts were on to locate the whereabouts of the abducted victim.
