The Nigeria police chief has ordered the nationwide deployment of anti-riot officers as protests sparked by brutality of law enforcement took another turn.
A police spokesman said in a statement that anti-riot officers were being dispatched “to protect lives and property of all Nigerians and secure critical national infrastructure across the country”.
The demonstration which were initially focused on abolishing the federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), accused of extortion and extra-judicial killings erupted and spiralled out of control. The protest showed no sign of stopping despite the disbandment of SARS and announcement of reforms by the government.
