NGO sponsors evacuation of abandoned corpses overseas to Nigeria for burial

A Non Governmental Organization, Igede Charitable Organization said it would fund the evacuation of abandoned corpses of indigenes of Ojoto, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State in overseas back to Nigeria for befiting burial.

The corpses were reportedly abandoned by their families over lack of fund to bring them back home for burial.

Speaking to newsmen weekend during the inauguration of its office at Ojoto Obofia, Chairman of the NGO, Chief Obiemeka Ifionu said the gesture was part of the group’s humanitarian aid to the needy.

He said members of the group tasked themselves to fund the evacuation.

He said, “We are funding five of them their families are financially handicapped to bring them back home from Singapore, India, Indonisia and South Africa.

“The money we provided in evacuating the corpes ran into millions of naira and the cost of the evacuation from the various countries differs. We will present money to their bereaved families during their funeral ceremony”

Ifionu further revealed that the group would also be offsetting medical bill of an indigene of the community to the tune of N3million, adding that they had already paid for few others.

“The new office is meant for the financially handicapped. Over 50 people have benefited since our existence about a year now and we assist in other areas like offering scholarships to indigent students and financial aid to widows.

“We provided palliatives including 400 tubers of yam and #10,000 each to 20 indigent families to assauge the effect of the coronavirus pandemic and also visited some less previleged homes,” he added.

Founder of the NGO, Chief Kenechukwu Ezeofia disclosed that the sum of #500,000 would be presented to each of the bereaved families during the burial ceremony.

“We also spent #3million on a patient with brain tumor and #6million on another with spinal code problem. Both of them have recovered,” he added.
