New naira notes: Jubilation in Anambra as CBN extends deadline

…Anambra traders had requested for time extension over new naira notes deadline

It was jubilation galore on Sunday in various cities in Anambra following the announcement of extension of new naira notes deadline to February 10 by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, in a press statement said the new deadline is February 10, 2023.

Residents of the state, especially traders had requested for time extension over new naira notes deadline.

Traders in Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka markets had mounted pressure on the Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN) to extend the deadline for old naira notes to cease being legal tender.

Other stakeholders, including monarchs and religious leaders in the state also joined in the extension call in order to allow the new notes to circulate well and ensure the mop up of the old notes.

The traders, during sensitisation in major markets in the three major cities in the state by officials of the Central Bank, said the redesigned naira notes were in short supplies in commercial banks.

They also alleged that the new money was being sold in black markets across markets in the state.

One of the traders, Chigozie Exenwa, said “The old notes are expected to be out of circulation by January 31 yet there is scarcity of the new notes as banks keep dispensing old notes to their customers.

“Thank God the Central Bank of Nigeria has finally headed our call to extend the deadline.”
