As expected, the Indian Government has selected the names of nine new judges recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium. The Supreme Court is the highest court of India.
The Daily Vendor Newspaper learnt that the list also includes three women judges. As a result, BV Nagarathna, who is on the list, could become the first woman judge of the country in 2026.
Meanwhile, the Indian President Ramnath Kobind has also agreed to appoint judges. Recently, the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana recommended the names of nine judges. The list included Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka, Justice VV Nagaratna, Telangana High Court Chief Justice Hima Kohli, Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Vikram Nath, Sikkim Chief Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Kerala High Court Justice City Ravi Kumar, Madras High Court Justice MM Sundresh, Gujarat High Court Justice Bela M Trivedi and lawyer PS Narasimha.
Since the formation of the Supreme Court on January 26, 1950, very few women have been appointed as judges of the Supreme Court in the last 61 years. So far only eight women have been able to become judges of the Supreme Court, where a woman taking over as chief justice will mark the beginning of a new history.
BV Nagaratna is the judge of the Karnataka High Court. In 2006, she was appointed Additional Judge of the High Court. A couple of years later she became a permanent judge. In the end, it will undoubtedly be a historic moment for the country’s chief justice. Her father Justice ES Venkatramaiya was also the Chief Justice of the country.
She held the post from June to December 1989. If the daughter follows the path of the father and becomes the Chief Justice, a circle will be filled.
