Murdered Enugu Lawyer: 2 suspects sentenced to death

An Enugu High Court on Monday found two suspects, Mr Dennis Ozonwgu, former President General of Okwojo Ngwo, in Udi Local Government Area, and Mr Kelvin Oyibe guilty in the murder of Chief Theophilus Ozongwu.

The suspects who were among 8 persons charged to court were convicted while six others were discharged and acquitted.

While delivering judgement on the matter which has been in court since early 2016, Justice Afam Nwobodo ruled that the suspects were as guilty as charged and thereby sentenced them to death while 6 other suspects were discharged and acquitted.

Recall that the late Ejimofor Ozongwu, a former Executive Secretary of Enugu State Committee on the creation of Adada State, was brutally murdered in a farm close to his residence on December 23, 2015 by some members of his community over a portion of land belonging to the state government and which was at the time in said to be in his care.

Reacting to the judgement on behalf of the family, Chief Eric Ozongwu said that though the family was happy that justice was served, they were not satisfied that some suspects were set free.

He revealed that they were ready to appeal the judgement which freed six of the suspects. He said “We believe that justice was done but not completely done. We are not relenting, we will go to a higher court.”
