One Sanatan Goswami alias Thakur and Mangala Goswami have been convicted in the Purulia child murder case.
They were sentenced to death by a court after a four-and-a-half-year trial. The judge of Purulia court decided to give exemplary punishment for the mother who killed her child by conspiring with her boyfriend and husband.
On July 11, 2016, Mangala admitted her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter to Purulia Sadar Hospital with symptoms of fever, cold and cough. Doctors said the child had multiple wounds and scratches on his body at the time. They even said the child had blood stains on his lower body.
A medical board was formed to find out the cause of the wound and an X-ray showed seven needles pierced inside her body. Asked how the needle was tied, Mangala could not give a good answer. She later claimed that she was the housemaid of the former homeguard Sanatan. Sanatan has carried out ‘torture’ on her daughter.
The Purulia court on Tuesday ordered the execution of the two. They were found guilty of killing the baby girl by piercing her body with a needle. After that incident in 2016, the baby’s mother Mangala and Mangala’s boyfriend Sanatan hid in Uttar Pradesh. They were later arrested and the case was decided in Purulia court today.
In fact, the government’s lawyer in the case filed an application on Monday. As mentioned, the issues raised in the hearing clearly show that Mangala Goswami brutally murdered her daughter despite being a mother.
Purulia district is one of the twenty-three districts of West Bengal state in Eastern India.
The incident shook the basic ethics of the society. Mangala helped to kill the child by shaking hands with her boyfriend. So exemplary punishment is required in this case. That’s why the judge wanted more than a day to give the final sentence. And today the Purulia court announced the death sentence.
Mangala married Sanatan after she got divorced from her first husband. But the three-and-a-half-year-old girl became a thorn in their eyes and they had decided to kill her. So the two of them inserted seven needles into her body to kill the baby girl with a cold head.
Anwar Ali Ansari, the public prosecutor in the case, said: “The court has found both husband and wife guilty. The strongest punishments were meted out to the culprits. ” This time the verdict will be sent to the Calcutta High Court by the judge of Purulia court.
This incident in July 2016 caused a stir in the whole country. According to Purulia court sources, a total of 44 witnesses testified in the case. The case started on October 24 of that year after the chargesheet was filed 56 days after the complaint.
Dipankar Sarkar, then co-ordinator of Purulia Child Line, lodged a complaint with Purulia Police Station on July 14 of that year. The baby girl could not be saved even after seven needles were removed from her body through surgery.
She died at SSKM hospital at Kolkata on the night of July 22. Police then arrested her mother Mangala and Sanatan Goswami. She later claimed that she was the housemaid of the former homeguard Sanatan. Sanatan has carried out ‘torture’ on her daughter.
After hearing the death sentence in the court on Tuesday, Sanatan was completely silent. Although Mangala has repeatedly stated, she is innocent.
