A terrible train accident took place near Domohani in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. The 15833 Up Bikaner-Guwahati Express going from Patna to Guwahati has derailed. Today evening, the accident took place in Domohani area of Mainaguri and twelve compartments of the train has derailed. Many passengers are feared to have died in the accident. The bodies of eight people have been recovered. As per the Indian Railway officers, more than 100 injured when 12 coaches of Bikanir Guwahati Express train derailed and overturned.
The train was going from Patna to Guwahati and has derailed after it crossed Mainaguri. A high-level enquiry has been ordered by the Indian Railway officials, ‘Some of the injured passengers were rescued and admitted to Jalpaiguri, Mainaguri and North Bengal Medical College Hospitals. The condition of 15 of the injured is said to be extremely critical. Rail has ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.
It is learned that the train from Patna to Guwahati met with an accident at around 5 pm on Thursday. After the accident, 4-5 compartments of the train were completely twisted, and one coach goes up to another coach. The death toll is expected to rise. At the time of the accident, the speed of the train was 40 kilometers per hour. Initially, it is believed that 12 compartments have been damaged in the accident along with the train’s engine. The train was carrying about 800 passengers when it has started from Patna. Later passengers got on and off from different stations. In the accident spot the passengers were seen scattered on both sides of the railway line after the accident and many are still inside the coaches. Rescue work has started and attempts are being made to cut the compartment with gas cutters and evacuate the passengers. Upon receiving the news of the accident, the railway rescue team reached the spot from Alipurduar.
The injured passengers were initially taken to Mainaguri Hospital and later they were shifted to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital due to inadequate infrastructure of the Mainaguri Hospital. Besides, North Bengal Medical College has also been asked to be ready. Doctors and nurses have been taken from different block hospitals in Jalpaiguri.
Besides, more than 50 ambulances have left for the accident site. Initially, Jalpaiguri District Magistrate Moumita Godara Basu said that three bodies had been recovered after the accident. She has also said that necessary lights and generators were being provided for the rescue as darkness fell. A team from the medical college also reached the spot. “The rescue team has not yet arrived,” she told the Daily Vendor News paper’s correspondent. People from the area and local firefighters are conducting rescue operations. There are 12 compartments of the train. Lots of passengers stuck inside. They are all screaming. We feel very helpless. “
