Man stabs lover for rejecting his marriage proposal, hangs self in Kenya

Residents of Rurare village, Musikoma ward Kanduyi constituency Bungoma County woke up to a rude shock after Evans Wanjala, 34, committed suicide after a girl he was dating dismissed his request of getting married to him.

Preliminary investigations indicate that before the deceased committed suicide he raided the girl’s home stabbed her lover severally on the stomach on allegations that she has been conning him money but at last she turned down his offer of marrying him and that he found another man with her.

Speaking through an interview, Fidelis Mechumo, brother to the deceased, said that the deceased has been having a love affair with Juliet Makokha, 29, for the past 9 months after he divorced his wife over ‘Mpango wa kando’.

He added that his brother has been having stress for some time but he failed to reveal what he was going through until when he stabbed his lover and went on committing suicide, adding that no note his brother has left behind to show what really prompted him to take away his own life.

“If he could have shared what he has been going through I could have counseled him, it’s unfortunate that he has committed suicide, it is my humble appeal that those in love affairs seek proper guidance on the way forward if they disagree with their partners,” he said.

He also said that the deceased was a father of four children but he divorced his wife and concentrated on Juliet who stays 5 Metres from his home.

“My brother’s wife left him because of being involved in love affairs with Juliet but along the way the deceased fell out with her after she conned him over Ksh.50, 000, “he added.

Confirming the incident, Bungoma south Police commander, Benjamin Kimwele he a got a call from Musikoma police station that a middle aged man has committed suicide he send police officers from the station who visited the scene of crime to  establish what prompted the man to commit suicide.

They establish that the deceased person had a quarrel with his girl friend in the girl friend’s house before he grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed several times in the abdomen, on realizing that the girl fell unconscious, the deceased disappeared but he was found hanged with a manila rope behind his house on the trass pole.

Kimwele added that the injured lady was rushed to Bungoma County Referral hospital where she is admitted in a critical condition. The body of the deceased was picked by the police and taken to Bungoma referral hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.

“Such an incident is a violation of gender and we as the police will not entertain such acts. Those in love affairs should seek guidance and counseling from relevant authorities before making the final decision,” he said.   

On his part, Taiga Wanyanja, a counselor condemned the incidence saying that during this pandemic period many people are undergoing depression and stress and their need for Bungoma County to establish counseling department at Bungoma County referral hospital to help in giving guidance to stem the high number of suicidal cases in the county.

“During the Covid-19 lockdowns Bungoma County has recorded high number of teenage pregnancy, suicidal cases and mental illness all linked to lack of psychiatric at specialist at Bungoma county hospital,” he said.
