Man remanded for raping 2-year old girl in Anambra

A 35-year old man, Joseph Egwuatu has been remanded in prison for allegedly raping a 2 year old baby in Nzam, Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The suspect was arraigned before the Children, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka on a two count charge bothering on rape. 

When the charge was read to him, he did not not take a plea.

Speaking shortly after court session, the suspect denied the allegation, saying he only opted to assist babysit the child when she was asked by one of the relatives to do so upon running an errand.

He said, “I stepped out to get few things done in the house when I heard the baby crying and decided to go check on her. I was however shocked to see her in pool of her own blood with lots of tear in her vagina.

“It was at that moment that one of our relative stepped in and raised alarm telling everyone that I raped the baby. I will never attempt to harm anyone let alone my blood.”

According to a source, the suspect was the one that sent the relative to fetch water from far distance.

The Nation gathered that the victim had since been taken to hospital for medical attention while the suspect has been remanded.

Reacting, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo expressed dismay over the incident, assuring that justice would take its full course.

“My ministry is starting a media tour where ndị Anambra will be sensitized on the dangers and consequences of rape, child molestation, child labor, abuse and other related issues.

“I urge everyone to shun all forms of vices in the society and be agent of change,” she said.
