Man loses wife, property worth millions to gas explosion in Ogun

An elderly man, Saula Ajayi, has lamented the death of his aged wife who reportedly died from the shock of a gas explosion at one of the apartments at their residence in the Ijela area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The victim popularly known as Baba was said to have lost cash and property worth millions of naira when the fire from the gas explosion razed the bungalow.

THE DAILY VENDOR gathered that the explosion occurred on Friday when one of the tenants in the building was cooking with gas.

During the explosion, Ajayi’s aged wife fainted due to the shock and was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.

Narrating the incident, Kola Abolade said Baba’s wife died on Monday despite efforts to rescue her from coma.

He said, “The whole house was razed down. A particular elderly couple was badly affected. They lost about N1m; Ajayi just collected money from the cooperative but the fire burnt all their belongings. In fact, the mama who was earlier in coma died on Monday, August 29, 2022.”

Ajayi, while mourning the death of his wife and loss incurred during the fire incident, said he just returned from the bank when the explosion happened.

He said “I just returned from the bank with the sum of N500,000 and I had N350,000 at home but now everything is gone.

“I lost all my property, my two refrigerators, television set, all my documents while I was in the Army, clothes and other belongings all got burnt.”

He said the clothes he was putting on were given to him by a neighbour.

Attempts to get a reaction from the Ogun State Fire Service failed as the agency’s Director, Fatai Adefala, did not take his calls.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he had not been briefed about the incident.
