The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay, has stated that the charges levelled against the suspended Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, are still “allegations in petition” and cannot be used against him until flawless evidences are established.
Sagay made this known in a statement on Monday, August 10, while disclosing his intentions on the investigations embarked on by the retired justice Ayo Salami-led committee.
The legal professor noted that it is wrong to use the shreds of evidence obtained from individuals and organisations under EFCC probe against the embattled EFCC chair.
Faulting the composition of the Salami-led probe panel, Sagay said it is only the president of the appeal court that has no personal interest in Magu’s case.
According to Sagay, other persons comprised in the presidential investigation panel are not impartial, therefore evidences are being taken “behind Magu’s back.”
He further stressed that from his personal investigations, those probing Magu are his accusers who he may have stepped on their toes.
“Justice Salami appears to be the only neutral person on the panel. I criticised the Salami panel for taking evidence from the accusers behind Magu’s back and for not giving him the petitions against him in advance of his defence.
“Also from the reports we read, the panel is packed with representatives of the DSS (Department of State Services), the Ministry of Justice and others from security agencies. These are also his accusers.”
Magu is facing a presidential probe panel, following petition submitted by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, alleging that that anti-corruption boss was relooting funds recovered from suspects.
