A political analyst, Chima Christian has berated leadership in the south east over growing agitations in the zone, blaming the ugly development on broken infrastructure and leadership failures.

He said governors of the 5 eastern states had over the years demonstrated disinterest in public infrastructure, especially roads.

He regretted that moving within the south-east had become a nightmare, saying a journey of 45 minutes now takes three hours.

He said, “For the past seven years and counting, there has been a general disinterest by the governors of the 5 south-eastern states in the area of public infrastructure, especially roads. Dave Umahi’s Ebonyi state qualifies as the only exception.

“Even Anambra that claimed to have the best network of roads now shamefully has the best network of failed and bad roads.

“Existing roads are barely maintained. New road projects, where initiated, hardly gets finished and are done haphazardly. Motorable roads in the south-east are now few and far in-between.

“To avoid the potholes, gullies, death traps and mini ponds that have taken over what used to be roads, few alternative routes often get congested.

“In consequence, moving from point-a to point-b in the south-east has become a nightmare of some sorts. A journey of 45 minutes now takes in excess of three hours.

“This and other governance/leadership failures add to the growing list of frustrations that fuel present day violent agitations.

Chima however stressed that the ugly situation was not enough justification for the wanthon destruction of lives and property prevalent in the region, calling on perpetrators to sheath their swords.

“Yet, I can’t find how ongoing killings and wanton destructions will fix the broken public infrastructure and other issues in the south-east. Our complaints are valid. Yet, we cannot shoot and burn our way into the kind of future we seek.

“I offer sincere condolences to the families of ‘Eze B’ and all others that were attacked and killed in the barbarism that is now threatening to engulf the once peaceful region. It is well,” he added.
