Lawmakers seek Buhari’s intervention over abandoned Enugu-Onitsha expressway

The Anambra State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over the abandonment of the Anambra section of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The lawmakers called on President Mohammadu Buhari to intervene to rescue the million users from untold hardships ocassioned by the diplorable condition of the road.

In a resolution sequel to motion sponsored by the majority leader, Dr. Nnamdi Okafor during plenary, the lawmakers described the road as important Trunk -A highway, stressing that its completion would not only boost economic activities, improve goods delivery, but minimize vehicular damages and increase revenues to states served by the highway.

According to Okafor, the contract for the road reconstruction was awarded to Messrs Reynod Construction company (RCC) in November 2018 with a completion period of forty two months.

“The construction company has already completed on worst dilapidated Umunya /Awkuzu axis of the expressway and embarked on the Amawbia /Awkuzu section and was doing well at a very good pace until the lock down and state boundary closures that came with the COVID-19 pandemic occurred,” he said.

Okafor however wondered why the contractors were yet to return to site even after several weeks of lifting of lockdown and interstate border closure by the Federal Government.

He added, “We call on President Mohammadu Buhari, through the Minister of Works and Housing, to direct the contractor reconstructing the Anambra section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), to return to site to complete the good it started on the road to alleviate the sufferings of the road users.

The Speaker, Uche Okafor underscored the strategic position of the highway to the socio-economic activities of the South -South and South East geo-political zones, expressing confidence that the Federal Government would direct the contractor back to site.
