Int’l Women’s Day: SEOF, Group Mentor, Empower Anambra Widows in Businesses, Careers

Scores of young widows from three local government areas of Ekwusigo, Ihiala and Ogbaru, Anambra State on Friday received mentorship from WHAIAfrica, a non governmental organization in partnership with Sir Emeka Offor Foundation (SEOF).

The programme expected to kickstart Global Mentoring Walk in commemoration of 2024 International Women’s Day, featured lectures on gender-based violence, including physical, psychological, sexual and socio-economic.

The participants were lectured by resource persons on need to report any gender-based violence cases to appropriate authorities through an app made available to them for necessary action.

Addressing newsmen, Executive Director, WHAIAFRICA, Miss Nkechi Udegbuka said the inclusion of young widows in the project was informed by desire to mentor them to grow their individual businesses and careers.

She said her organization had established women leaders not just in Anambra but nationwide and globally, including Canada and the United States of America.

She said, “We decided to inspire the widows and people living with disabilities. We selected young widows who are still struggling in their businesses.

“They need to receive proper mentorship to accelerate the growth of their businesses. They are guided to set up a one-year action plan, what they will like to achieve in next one year.

“We partner with Sir Emeka Offor Foundation which provides the logistics for these people.

“We also have the Vital Voices in global partnership with headquarters in Washington DC and the initiator of Global Mentoring Walk founded by US former First Lady, Larry Clinton.”

Addressing the participants, Coordinator of SEOF, Hon Tony Obi advised them to see the programme as opportunity to help themselves in their various businesses and other endeavours.

One of the participants, Ogochukwu Igbokwe appreciated the benefactors for remembering them, saying the programme had exposed them to new ideas which would improve their business ventures.
