Insecurity: Odinkalu optimistic of peaceful Southeast as Commission submits report to Soludo

The Truth, Justice and Peace Commission investigating prevailing insecurity in Southeast will on March 6, 2024 submit the report of its findings to Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo.

Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu who disclosed this on Monday in Awka, expressed optimism that the report would mark a watershed in the quest for peace, reconciliation and stability in the region.

The governor, had within three months in office, set up the Commission, a move that signaled his quest for peace in the state.

The Commission with Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as Secretary was set up with the mandate to inquire into causes, impact and make recommendations for possible solution to insecurity in the state.

Odinkalu, former Chairman of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission and frontline Human Rights Lawyer described the job as tasking but great privilege.

He appreciated Anambra State Government for its genuine quest for end to insecurity which he referred to as hydra-headed occasioned by multiple factors which were all captured.

He said, “The Commission has enjoyed the support of the government and communities around Southeast Nigeria, which shows that people in the region wanted an end to this insecurity.

“We also want to thank the good people of Anambra, traditional rulers, town union leadership, Security agencies, the media for their invaluable cooperation and support.

“We hope that the report will also serve as a reference point for other states which may want to address the security situation within their domain with sincerity and commitment as well as for the Federal government.”
