Military men were said to have allegedly stormed the Awo Mmamma area of in the Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State in reprisal attack and burnt businesses, including a Hotel and a fuel station.
The Daily Vendor Newspaper gathered that trouble started when unknown gunmen on Monday afternoon killed a military officer when they attacked some soldiers in the area.
But in a reprisal, military men regrouped, stormed the town and allegedly burnt a hotel, cars, houses and shops.
Trending videos on social media showed many businesses, shops on fire as owners and sympathizers cried and watched helplessly.
The incident which happened at Ishieke junction in the area has caused panic in the whole community.
Another video seen by The Daily Vendor showed women and children fleeing the community over alleged take over of the community by soldiers.
A source told newsmen that “some hoodlums attacked some soldiers at Ishieke junction in Awo Mmamma and killed one of them. They zoomed off towards Ihiala in Anambra State. Later soldiers invaded the area and caused havoc in the area by setting a hotel, cars, houses and stalls on fire.”
The police spokesperson for the state command, Micheal Abattam, didn’t respond to a text message sent to him by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report.
Also, the spokesperson for the 34 Artillery Brigade Command, Owerri, Sunday Akuga, didn’t take several calls put to his mobile number.
In another video obtained by The Daily Vendor Newspaper, a resident of the area could be heard lamenting over the incident. He accused the State Governor, Hope Uzodimma of being behind the attack.
Another video released late Monday night showed the entire area razed down by the fire.
