Hardship: Soludo mulls Social Register upgrade

Anambra State Government has announced its plans to review and upgrade its current Social Register.

Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake disclosed this when the State House of Assembly Committee on Donor Agencies and Sustainable Development Goals went on oversight function to her Ministry.

She said the register should be undergoing regular update and continuous refreshing hence the resolve by the Governor Chukwuma Soludo led administration to review and update it this 2024.

She said, “As a result of the economic realities on ground, some people may have fallen into the category of poverty line while some could also may have left the level or even dead.

“The state is considering looking beyond the framework being adopted by the federal government and work with UNICEF to develop a robust Social Register that will serve both the state and federal governments.

“The state wants to have a Social Register that is all inclusive not just for federal government interventions but one that the state can also rely on whenever it has an intervention programme for the people.”

The Commissioner further hinted that the state was also planning to adopt a Social Protection Policy targeted at improving the livelihood of the people through a robust register.

Chairman House committee on Economic Planning, budget and Donor Agencies, Mr John Obu representing Orumba North expressed satisfaction with the ministry’s activities.

“So far we are impressed by the activities of the ministry based on the robust interactions we had,” he said.
