Global warming: Anambra distributes 27,000 bulbs, seedlings to households

The Anambra State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has commenced distribution of energy-saving bulbs to some communities in the state.

The communities also benefitted from seedlings targeted at regenerating forest and green environment around erosion-prone communities in the State.

The Project Coordinator, Michael Ivenso disclosed that no fewer than 27,000 units of energy-saving bulbs have been procured for distribution across erosion communities in the State.

Presenting the items to the Abagana community in Njikokka L.G.A, Ivenso, represented by the Communication Officer of the Project, Mr. Emeka Achebe said about 34 various communities would benefit from the donation in line with Governor Obiano’s vision for creating a climate resilient State, one community at a time.

He said, “The energy-saving bulbs uses significantly less power to produce the same luminous capacity compared to traditional bulbs thereby reducing greenhouse emissions which is a crucial element in the fight against global warming and climate change impact”.

Speaking on the Seedlings, the Natural Resources Specialist, Mr. Emenike Ajulufo explained that they were made of some socio-economic trees of local species which were carefully chosen to help regenerate forest and green environment around erosion-prone communities in the State.

He said, “Deep roots of these trees hold the soil to make them erosion-resistant, their branches provide cover and carbon sink for humans and the environment.

“The farm seedlings would provide livelihood restoration for vulnerable population in the effort to create food security.”

Ajulufo further disclosed that when combined, the 2-pronged approach of economic tree planting and farm seedling would prevent formation of gullies and improve livelihood support for the people of the state.

Receiving the items on behalf of the community, Traditional Ruler of Abagana, Igwe Mbamali Okeke commended the State Government for the kind gesture noting that NEWMAP has really been rolling out different innovative measures in erosion control.

Also speaking, the Community Association Chairman, Sir. Godfrey Nzeakor expressed the community’s gratitude to NEWMAP pointing out that the seedlings would go a long way in stabilizing their erosion prone community, just as he assured equitable distribution of the items.

The distribution of the seedlings and energy-saving bulbs is holding simultaneously by the NEWMAP officials across various communities of the state.
