Alumni of Visva-Bharati arrested from Shantiniketan in sedition case. Visva-Bharati is a central research university and an Institution of National Importance located in Shantiniketan, West Bengal, India.

The sedition law says, โ€œWhoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards, the government established by law in India, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years, to which a fine may be added; or, with fine.โ€

Clearly, the law does not say that sedition is an act against the country or the nation.

Police from Jhargram and Santiniketan police stations arrested the student named Tipu Sultan on Wednesday.

A case has been filed against him under sections 25 and 26 of the Arms Act as well as the UAPA Act.

Earlier, Tipu was arrested on suspicion of being a Maoist. The Communist Party of India (Maoist) is a Maoist communist political party and militant organization in India which aims to overthrow the “semi-colonial and semi-feudal Indian state” through people’s war.

Tipu Sultan is one of the few student leaders who played an important role in the formation of the Left Student Organization at Visva Bharati University at present.
