Former Head of State, Gowon Says What Happened During Civil War Bad

A former Nigeria’s Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has described as ‘bad’ what happened during the Nigerian civil war.

While speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Gowon said the breakdown of the Aburi agreement also had a negative effect on the civil war.

He said, “Anyone with a conscience will know that what happened during the Nigerian civil war is bad and we should put (it) right. Several political attempts were made to resolve the problem.

“We went to Aburi to hold a meeting. But from Odumegwu Ojukwu, he says ‘on Aburi we stand’, and I said ‘on Aburi you will fall’, and that’s probably the beginning…

“The civil war had to happen based on the breakdown of the Aburi agreement despite the effort that was made to reconcile our differences and save a serious situation.

“It got to a stage that we had Ojukwu sought to break away from Nigeria. Because of the tensed situation, we had to find a way of resolving that problem.”
