Forgotten Ventilators: PDP berates Obiano’s APGA for throwing continuity to the wolves

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has said that the greatest sin of the present All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) government of Gov Willie Obiano is jettisoning a well-cooked meal called Continuity. A meal that was equally served well.

The PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Nnamdi Nwangwu stated this in a chat with THE DAILY VENDOR.

Continuing, he said “But for reasons best known to Obiano’s APGA, the government steered away from a well-mapped out route that would have kept Anambra State firmly at the top of even development ably driven by its appreciably effective motor – ANIDS.

Nwangwu was lamenting about the myriad of opportunities lost by the present APGA government while chatting with newsmen in Awka on the issue of abandonment of some ventilators as they were purchased.

”While most predecessors are guilty of not procuring enough equipment for continuity, Obiano and his APGA abandoned the ones his predecessor procured for him to make the only state-owned teaching hospital a grade A health institution,” Nwangwu lamented.

He recalled that the then Commissioner for Health, Prof Amobi Ilika confirmed the ventilators were purchased by him under HE Peter Obi’s government shortly before the hospital got accredited by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria as a teaching hospital in 2012.

When contacted for his response, the former governor, Peter Obi said he was only surprised that the ventilators and other equipment bought about eight years ago were rather locked up in the store instead of being made use of accordingly.

”My deep research uncovered that four of the ventilators are presently in use while four others, including other equipment like .Fluoroscopy,
Mammograph,
Digital Xray machines,
CT Scan, 16Slice,
Ultrasound,
Anaesthetic machine,
C-Arm Xray,
Giant Autoclave,
Bronchoscope,
Cardiac Catherization equipment, and many others, were locked up in the store,” Nwangwu said.

”Some countries in Africa don’t have a single ventilator while a visionary leader procured as many as eight for a teaching hospital in his dear state. But barely two years into office, Obiano changed the entire management board of the teaching hospital led by Dr. Dozie Ikedife, whose tenure helped secure the institution’s accreditation that saw to the graduation of its first medical doctors. The APGA governor replaced them with a 14-man management board led by Igwe Emeka Ilouno, thereby severing continuity. Little wonder then that some of the ventilators were left unused.”

Nwangwu wondered aloud why any news about the present government is usually uninspiring, believing strongly that Anambra can’t wait for 2021 to vote out the present government from power.

”After eight years of stagnation, Anambra needs a responsible government to start all over again,” Nwangwu said.
