Flooding: CLO urges Obiano to establish victims’ disaster fund

Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) Anambra State branch has called on the State governor, Willie Obiano to establish special fund for flood victims in the state.

Chairman of the body, Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme said the funds were to cater for victims of devastating flooding in six Local Governments of Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Onitsha North, Ihiala and Anambra East and West.

Ezekwueme in a statement on Sunday, called on Governments at all levels, cooperate organisations and spirited individuals to come to the aids of the victims.

He also called on both National and State Emergency Management Agencies to urgently provide immediate relief materials and palliatives to the victims.

He said, “According to Pope Francis, when one suffers directly, everyone suffers indirectly, hence the inevitable need to see their plights and predicaments as collective problems of all citizenry in solidarity with the victims.

“Governments should spare no efforts to ameliorate their pathetic predicaments through adequate provision of relief materials and palliatives, payment of adequate compensation and rehabilitation of their crops destroyed by the flood.

“Most importantly is to ensure continued education of children of victims of horrendous flooding in various Internal Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

“The camps should be extended to all Local Governments with adequate security and basic necessities of life to give them sense of belonging.”

Appreciating government efforts to curtailing escalation of the scourge, especially her warning to those living in riverine areas to relocate, the CLO boss enjoined those affected to heed the advise to protect and safeguard their lives and property.
