FIA holds roundtable discussion on human trafficking

ISLAMABAD: Federal Investigation Agency(FIA) on Wednesday held a Roundtable Discussion with different walks of life and discussed various social issues related to human trafficking.

Participants at the meeting, which held at FIA Headquarters, were Journalists, Media personalities, Educationists and Travel Agents.

 The event was conducted with the  collaboration of United Nations office on drugs and Crime –UNODC, country office, Pakistan.

 The event was honored by director anti human smuggling –AHS, Mr. Javed Akbar Riaz and director training Dr. Athar Waheed whereas UNODC country office team members, local journalists, media persons, educationists,Travel Agents and representatives of civil society Organizations attended the event.

The director AHS Javed Akbar Riaz in his opening address thanked UNODC for organizing the event to combat Human Trafficking and Migrants Smuggling and highlighting range of upcoming awareness activities for general public. He urged the stakeholders present at the discussion forum for collective efforts in formulating awareness strategies and Prevention against Human Trafficking, strengthen soordination between stakeholders, Improved Information sharing on Human Trafficking and victim support activities. 

Ms. Shahida Gillani- program manager, HTMS- UNODC in her presentation gave an understanding of Trafficking in Person – TIP and Smuggling of Migrants – SOM and discussed the relevant laws relating to HTMS in order to sensitize the audience. Mr. Asif Jah, Lead Consultant – UNODC in his presentation informed about the aims and objectives of the current awareness campaign to combat TIP and SOM, which is being launched in all four provinces and in AJK and Gilgit Baltistan. 

Team UNODC discussed the role of media, travel agents and civil society organizations in detail and emphasized on these stakeholders to use their professional influence in raising awareness in general public.

Dr. Athar Waheed, director training, FIA in his concluding remarks thanked UNODC for their tireless efforts to organize awareness activities for combating Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrant and capacity building of stakeholders.

 He assured stakeholders of complete cooperation to address human trafficking and migrants smuggling crimes against vulnerable segments of society.
