The Abuja Police command has arrested 53 suspects in connection with various crimes committed within the Federal Capital Territory.

Those arrested include suspected kidnappers and a gang of car thieves, who claimed to have stolen over 54 vehicles within the FCT.

While parading the suspects on Thursday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, said the command had redoubled its efforts in terms of strategic deployment of men in major highways, providing diligent patrols as well as robust stop and search operations.

According to Ciroma, strategic raids on black spots are being carried out, including tactical land and aerial surveillance, joint operations with sister security agencies, collaboration with community stakeholders and other covert means to ensure crime-free Christmas and New Year celebrations within the FCT.

“It is pertinent to inform you that the counter-kidnapping operations are still ongoing to dislodge kidnappers and their bases. The command will not leave any stone unturned until we rid the FCT of crime and criminality,” he stated.

He reminded residents of the FCT that the ban on fireworks was still in force, and appealed to them against violating the ban.

Items recovered from the suspected criminals included eight vehicles, two rifles and one Berretta pistol, 10 live cartridges, six cutlasses and 34 master keys.

Others are two anti-trackers, seven knives, 46 bags of Indian hemp, sachets of codeine and other illicit drugs, several cultist outfits, 11 SIM cards and three pairs of military camouflage and an improvised gun.

Speaking during the parade, one of the suspects, Solomon Ngbede, who was arrested for involvement in cult-related activities in the Idu area of Abuja, said he was forced to join a cult by his friends.

Two female suspects, one 28-year-old Ruth and 23-year-old Kehinde Treasure, were also arrested during a cult initiation in Mpape.

The female suspects claimed that they were simply invited to have fun, stressing that they were not aware that the party was organised to induct new cult members.
