Explosion averted as diesel laden tanker crashes into another in Anambra

Tragedy was on Wednesday averted along Awka-Enugu express way, Anambra state when a diesel laden Mack truck crashed with another empty Mark truck and a blue black Siena Bus.

The crash which occurred at the immigration junction Agu-Awka area involved three males.

An eye witness who identified himself as Echendu attributed the accident to excessive speeding leading to loss of control of the truck.

Confirming the incident, Ag. Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Kamal Musa said the crash involved three male adults.

He said, “A tragedy of immense proportion was averted today 28th October, 2020 , at about 0915hrs in Awka when a diesel laden Mack truck with registration number ENU 548 ZH crashed with another empty Mark truck with registration number GWA 772 YM and a blue black Siena Bus with registration number GOD 969 XA at the immigration junction Agu-Awka along Awka- Enugu express way

“The crash involved three (3) male adults, with one who was slightly injured but refused to be taken to the hospital by FRSC Operatives was carried away by Hausa Community from Amansea.

“FRSC Operatives from the Sector Command are on ground to ensure free flow of traffic while the obstruction is being cleared.

“Also on ground are State Officials and Men of the Anambra State Fire service with their chemicals to neutralize the inflammable content of the truck as product is being trans-loaded.

“The Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps Anambra State, Andrew Kumapayi while wishing the injured victim quick recovery warns motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits stipulated by law especially in built-up areas as Road Traffic crashes are avoidable.”

Also confirming the incident, Fire Service Chief, Engr. Martin Agbili said the effect of the fire was controlled through the application of water and chemical foam compound.

He said the actual cause of the head-on collision has not been acertained.

He said, “At about 0850 hours, we received a distress call of two tankers (one fully loaded with kerosene and one empty tank) that had head-on collision at Eze Uzu junction along Enugu-Onitsha Expresway, Agu-Awka, Anambra State.

“Immediately, our fire fighting trucks and firefighters (Federal & State Fire Services) were deployed to the incident scene.

“Although, some on going cars were affected during the head-on collision but there was no loss of life except one of the conductors of the trucks that had some injuries.”
