Government of Anambra state has been urged to consider the option of requesting the operation Exercise Golden Dawn launched by the Nigerian army be delayed to enable the people of the state put their house in order.

A political analyst, Chima Christian gave the advice in a statement in Awka, saying more guns alone would not solve the problems of the south-east.

The Nigerian military on Monday launched ‘Exercise Golden Dawn’, to provide security in Anambra state following growing insecurity situation in the state which had claimed scores of lives and property in the state.

But Chima said much as the exercise might achieve minimal peace, it could not address the root causes of the problems created by the unknown gunmen.

The statement reads in part,
The Nigerian military has launched what it calls ‘Exercise Golden Dawn’ in Anambra state. The exercise, I understand, is the government’s forceful response to security challenges posed by unknown gunmen.

“I have stretched my mind a bit further on this subject. More guns alone will not solve the problems of the south-east.

“This military exercise may achieve limited ‘peaceʼ objectives. Yet, it cannot roundly address the root causes of the problems which unknown gunmen is only a pronounced symptom.

“‘Python Dance,ʼ for instance, ended up sowing seeds of future conflicts, some of which we are reaping the fruits today. Despite the fanciful name, ‘Golden Dawnʼ is not promising to be any different.

“I, like many Anambra citizens, are greatly disturbed by the activities of unknown gunmen. Yet, we should draw some lessons from the decade-long military operations in the north-east.

“I recommend we resist the temptation to go for short term solutions that may put the south-east in an unending cycle of gun violence.

“I implore the government and citizens of Anambra state to consider requesting that this military exercise be delayed by at least three weeks while Ndị Anambra collectively try to put our house in order.

“There are no easy solutions. It is to our advantage that the south-east solves this security situation internally. For the south-east, peace achieved through bullets will always be short-lived.”
