#EndSARS: Grant amnesty to hoodlums who returned looted arms – Group tells Govs

…Compensate Police, victims of protest

A rights group, Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’ Foundation (HURIDE), has appealed to state Governors to grant amnesty to the hoodlums who carted arms like AK-47 Raffles belonging to the Police during the recent #EndSARS protest but decided to return them within 14 days.

It also asked the Governors to immediately set up a special committee to access the level of killings and destruction of public institutions targeted at compensating victims of #End SARS protest in their various States.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Dede Uzor A Uzor and its Chief media officer Comrade Unah Zack Unah, HURIDE group particularly called for the compensation for families of Poliice officers who lost their lives during the protest, just as it sympathised with those who lost their loved ones.

It said it might not legislate for the Governors how much the state can pay each victim but they can take a cue from Governor Nyeso Nwike of Rivers State who was paying N20m to each of the late Poliice officers in addition to scholarship to their children.

The group also urged the Governors to assist the Police authority to rebuild all the stations burnt or damaged during the violent-turned protest.

“We condemn the obnoxious and lackadaisical disposition of some governors especially the South East governors who had done nothing to support the police and boost their moral since after the #EndSARS protest paving the way for criminals to take over streets of each cities unleashing terror to citizens.

“After 14 days, the Police authority should begin agressive man -hunt of anyone linked with the incident until all the arms in wrong hands are fully recovered,” it noted.

The group further urged the Governors to empower the vigilant groups in their respective states by paying them N30, 000 each to enable them complement the effort of the Police as part of community policing in the State.

“We also sympathise with families of the victims who lost their loved ones during this protest. We equally urge the governors to provide compensation to every victims who was muld down especially the recent Lekki public killings by some suspected soldiers as aresult of #ENDSARS protest,” the group added.
