#EndSARS: Armed men barricade Awkuzu SARS as protesters’ besiege facility in search of dead bodies

Some group of armed men on Friday barricaded the headquarters of the recently disbanded police arm, Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in Awkuzu, Anambra State following plans by thousands of youths to search the compound.

The brick wall met by the protesters led to blocking the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, after they were engaged in a sharp quarrel with the police.

The youths’ plans to search the facility, it was gathered, followed the belief that certain suspects were usually killed and buried inside the compound housing the SARS offices.

One of the protesters who preferred anonimity said they were at the SARS office to exhume bodies of the suspects so their loved ones could carry them for burials.

“We gathered that they usually bury some killed suspects inside their compound. We want to exhume their bodies so that their loved ones would know that they are dead and give them burials,” he said.

The DAILY VENDOR learnt that the protesters had since returned to Awka.

Reacting, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed said the former SARS compound has been converted to an annexe of the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID)

“It is now CID Annex. They (suspects) held in the centre are being profiled and investigated to ascertain the allegations levelled against them. Those found wanting would be prosecuted while those cleared would be released unconditionally,” he said.
