Edo Crisis: Purported Assembly Inauguration A Coup, Treasonable, Assault On Our Democracy – Gov. Obaseki

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has condemned Thursday’s incident at the House of Assembly.

He stated that the action of the lawmakers was a coup and treasonable.

The governor maintained that the inauguration of the lawmakers was an “illegal assault on our democracy.”

Governor Obaseki further noted that the former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, was determined to sink the state into deeper crisis.

The polity in Edo State has been heated ahead of the September 19 governorship election.

On Friday, in a broadcast, Obaseki said that the moves to occupy the assembly complex “had all the hallmarks of an attempted coup d’état.”

He cautioned that those “who set out to test our will in this regard will meet with the full wrath of the law”, observing that Edo people rose as one to prevent the desecration of democracy.

The governor expressed concern that some persons were out to put the state into needless conflicts in a bid to satisfy their illegitimate intentions.

“This unfortunate situation has festered because a former governor of the state is bent on throwing the state into crisis ahead of the forthcoming governorship elections.

”The government will take all steps necessary to defend the rule of law and democratic ideals,” Obaseki said.
