Ebonyi Judiciary Workers Divided Over Indefinite Strike

Workers in the Ebonyi State Judiciary were Thursday divided over the indefinite strike declared by the leadership of the union over its demand for improved welfare.

While some workers took side with the Leadership of the union on the strike, some others insisted that now is not the right time for any such action as the Covid-19 pandemic has crippled the economy of the country.

The Leadership of the union wants the state government to implement the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure.

When newsmen visited some of the Judiciary offices in the state, it was observed that the strike crippled activities as no court proceeding held at the State High Court.

Though no staff was sighted within the premises of the Judiciary Headquarters in total compliance to directives, some workers who were seen in clusters discussing the strike described the agitation as ill-timed.

The workers who spoke on grounds of anonymity said they expected the leadership to tarry a while for the COVID-19 period to end adding that the strike will earn them nothing.

However, some youths identified as non Judiciary workers were seen in clusters around the gate of the State High Court

Some Police officers were also seen at the gate  possibly to protect the facility.

The workers had issued a 14-day ultimatum and seven days grace period to demand that the State government commenced the implementation of the CJSS.

Vice President ofJudiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (South East Zone), Comrade Mark Ifezue, explained that the National leadership mandated the workers to withdraw their services pending the implementation of the wage structure.

The National Organising Secretary of the Union, Comrade Chinedu Eze, expressed worry over the presence of some strange faces within the premises of the Judiciary Headquarters, Abakaliki, which according to him was under lock and key by Judiciary Workers. Ends
