Driver escapes miraculously as commercial bus plunges into Anambra river

A commercial bus driver on Wednesday was rescued alive after his vehicle plunged into Ulasi River at Okija Bridge, along Ihiala-Onitsha expressway, Anambra state.

The accident which occurred around 4.30pm involved a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus.

The driver was said to had struggled to gain control of the vehicle following brake failure before it plunged into the river.

The Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Pascal Anigbo, confirmed the incident.

He said the victim had been rushed to the hospital while efforts were ongoing to tow the vehicle out of the river.

He said, “At about 4.03pm today Wednesday 8 July, 2020 a serious lone Road Traffic Crash (RTC) involving a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus with registration number ENU113XJ was recorded at Okija Bridge, along Ihiala-Onitsha expressway.

”The crash was reportedly caused by Brake Failure. The vehicle plunged into the Ulasi River as the driver struggled to gain control of the vehicle after the brakes failed.

“He was rushed to St. Thomas Hospital Okija by an FRSC rescue team from Ihiala Unit Command. Meanwhile, effort to tow the vehicle out of the river is on going.

“The Sector Commander FRSC, Andrew Kumapayi advises drivers to always ensure that the brakes, in addition to other mechanical and electrical components in their vehicles are in good working condition before embarking on any trip.

“He strongly warns drivers against over-speeding.”
