“Don’t kill me”, man arrested for killing monkey in Anambra community begs indigenes

A yet-to-be identified man has been arrested by indigenes of Awka, Anambra State for killing monkey in the area.

Awka kingdom is said to revere monkeys as sacred, while killing them is seen as sacrilegious.

The community also has a festival dedicated to the worship of Imo Awka god, symbolized by a monkey, with its shrine located in Amaenyi area of the town.

It is not a strange within the area to see monkeys jumping about in people’s residences without harassment.

The yet-to-be identified man who was arrested on Wednesday, in a viral video was seen confessing that the killing of the monkey was not deliberate, pleading he should not be harmed.

He said, “I have lived in Awka for 24 years, and I’m aware that Awka people neither permit the killing nor eating of monkeys.

“I did not intentionally kill the monkey. I had set trap in the bush, hoping to kill other bush meat to be used as delicacy, but unfortunately, it was the monkey that was trapped.

“I know I have committed, please do not kill me, but you can take me anywhere you want.”

During interrogation, the indigenes saw reasons with him, promising not to kill him.

“The community will take steps to appease the god of the land because of your actions to avoid repercussions,” they told him.
