Democracy day: Not much to be happy for – Obi

Vice Presidential Candidate of People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the last elections, Mr Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to hold on to every democratic ideal that would push the country forward in spite of so many challenges facing the nation.

Obi, in a release made available to the press as the country celebrates her Democracy Day, reminded Nigerians that democracy remained the bedrock on which the country was built, encouraging them to strive towards achieving better democratic ideals to ensure the country reaped greater dividends of democracy.

He explained that the democracy Nigeria enjoyes today did not come on a platter of gold, but regretted that not much have been achieved in the country due to accumulated years of leadership failure.

He said the major challenge was leaders sacrificing and focusing on the future, especially those things that made other countries to progress.

He said the COVID – 19 pandemic presented Nigeria with another opportunity to look inwards.

“Today, we are presented with another opportunity to rejoice, but the truth is that there is not much to be happy for. All we need is inward introspection about the ills of the country and the resolve to mend our ways for the benefit of our children.

“Each one of us has a role to play in pursuing our democratic ideals so as to reap the maximum dividends of democracy. We are all enjoined to contribute individually and collectively to the sustenance of our democracy,” he said.

In another development, Obi also commended Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem on his clearance by the Senate yesterday as the President of the Court of Appeal.

He said he was hopeful she would continue on the footsteps of his predecessor, Justice Zainab Buchachuwa, by strengthening the rule of law and contributing to the growth and development of jurisprudence.
