Death of octogenarian: Quit Agulu or face the music – Anambra community warns cultists, criminals

Following the death of an octogenarian, Mgbeke Ezeagha, in Ifiteani Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, of Anambra state, the Agulu Youths Association has ordered cultists and criminals to quit the community or be arrested and handed over to the police.

The 85-year old woman reportedly died after she was allegedly pushed by a police officer when the Special Anti Cultism Squad, SPACS, of the state Police command stormed the area to effect the arrest of her grand son, Innocent Ezeagha, a suspected cultist.

Rising from a meeting in the area, President General, Chief Andy Orakwelu regreted that the criminal activities of some youths have dragged the image of the community to the mud.

He commended the youths during a peaceful protest against the police over the death of the octogenarian.

“We’ve resolved that SPACS, as government security agency has the right to come and make arrest in Agulu without hindrance.

“A taskforce that will work as anti cult outfit in collaboration with SPACS, would be established and it is the PG that will confirm that any arrested suspect is a cultist/criminal or not”

On his part, the commander of Agulu branch of Anambra Vigilante Service, AVS, Mr Emeka Igwe vowed to resign if the criminals detained at SPACS cell and released because of mounting tension during the protest were not rearrested to face justice.

His words, “There were those hardened cultists/criminals who were released that were supposed not to be released and if they are not re arrested to face justice I will resign as AVS chairman in Agulu.

“Those criminals handle guns, we are capable of handling the criminals but it is just that their release discouraged us instead of spurring us to ensure safety of lives and property. I don’t hide criminals even if you are my mother”.

The commander of the youths, Stanley Ezeani described the release of the criminals as Christmas package for them, warning that “any problem caused by them again they will go to jail.”

“Those causing these criminal acts, saying that SPACS headquarters at Enugwu-Ukwu, should be burnt on the day of the protest are not from Agulu, they are cultists and terrorists. If SPACS say they will not come to Agulu again because of the incident it is unfortunate, we beg them to come.

“Ma Mgbeke has sacrificed herself for restoration of peace in Agulu and we commend the SPACS for assisting to fight crime and criminality in Agulu”

Also speaking, the commander of all markets in the state, Chief Chukwujekwu Okoye (a.k.a. Jonjoloko) said he was in support of the resolution as means of restoring sanity in the community.
