Cyclist’s passenger carrying masquerade crushed to death in Anambra

A passenger of a motorcyclist was on Thursday crushed to death by a truck driver at Awkuzu junction along Awka-Onitsha expressway, Anambra State.

The incident which occurred around 10.20am involved the truck and the motorcycle with four persons on board.

The Daily Vendor gathered that the cyclist was on speed with his passenger who was carrying a masquerade when both of them suddenly fell down after the load the passenger was carrying hit the truck while overtaking it.

“The bike rider was overtaking the truck when the load he was carrying (Izaga masquerade) which is very long hit the truck.

“The passenger he was carrying fell down and was hit by the back tyre of the moving truck,” an eyewitness said.

Confirming the incident, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Adeoye Irelewuyi blamed the crash on projected Load Violation.

He sympathized with the deceased family, warning motorist to desist from disobeying traffic rules and regulations, just as he stressed that traffic rules were made to advert such crashes.

He said, “An Unidentified driver of a commercial How truck truck with body code number: 371 belonging to BAU Cement and a driver of a Santa/KC motorcycle identified as Nnamdi Dieli was involved in a fatal road traffic crash at Awkuzu junction by Onitsha-Awka Expressway today 18th May, 2023 at about 10:20hrs.

“Four male adults were involved in the crash, one male adult was killed, one male adult was injured while two male adults were rescued unhurt.

“The FRSC rescue team from RS5.33 Nteje Anambra State rushed the victim to Chira Hospital, Akwuzu where one male adult was confirmed dead and his corpse deposited at same wisdom mortuary. 

“The team also ensured obstruction caused by the crash was cleared. The truck driver has been handed over to Oyi Police Division.”
