One of the customers who pleaded anonymity said the Police was compelled to resort to gun-shots to restore sanity to the area.

He said, “I came to the bank about 6.30 am but had stayed up to two hours without being paid. We queued up and as the crowd surged, the queues became disorganized and efforts by Police to control the crowd were in vain.

“As last resort, the police started shooting into the air to scare the crowd and restore peaceful atmosphere in the bank.”

The man however disclosed that one of those causing the disorder was immediately arrested and whisked away to the Onitsha Central Police Station.

Another customer, a woman who simply identified herself as Mama Obinna, said she ran away on hearing the shootings to save her life.

“It was at this juncture of the shooting that I ran away to avoid being hit by stray bullet, she stated.
