Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the capital of India’s West Bengal state. Kolkata has the lowest crime rate among the 19 major cities of the country. In addition, while the number of crimes has increased in many other cities of the country from 2016 to 2020, the number has decreased in the case of Kolkata.
The Daily Vendor Newspaper learnt that the information was contained in a report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which was released in Delhi on Tuesday.
Kolkata Police personnel and officers are also happy with the report that the crime rate in Kolkata has declined.
Note that last year’s NCRB report did not reveal the state’s data. The NCRB said that the information could not be mentioned in the report as it did not arrive on time.
According to the ‘Crime in India 2020’ or NCRB report published on this day, the total crime rate in Kolkata per lakh population in 2020 was 129.5. There, the rate is 1608.6 in Delhi, 1936.1 in Chennai, 1300 in Ahmedabad, 1300 in Surat and 316.8 in Mumbai.
In terms of IPC or Indian Penal Code, the crime rate in Kolkata in 2020 is 109.9. In the case where the Indian Penal Code is applicable for the crime, the crime rate of Delhi among the cities of the country is 1508.9, 1016.4 in Chennai, 262.4 in Mumbai, 500.3 in Lucknow, 638.6 in Surat and 98.5 in Ahmedabad.
The number of rapes in Calcutta was 11. There are 98 in Delhi, 409 in Jaipur, 322 in Mumbai and 106 in Bangalore. In 2020, the number of abductions in Kolkata was 306. The crime rate is higher in most cities of the country including Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Lucknow.
The number of thefts or robberies is also much lower in Kolkata than in other cities, the NCRB report said.
According to one of the upcoming lady advocate Shreyasi Ray “under our current Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, initially we may have had a rough time during her first stint in 2011 as there was a sense that law and order was not so much under her control but she is enough mature now in her third term and the city has been largely peaceful despite few of the incidence of violence in other parts of Bengal. The city is safe and we have quality schools and colleges, medical facilities. A lot has transmitted in Kolkata after 2011 Mamata Banerjee’s takes over. We can believe our Police Force and specially the cultured citizens of the city.
