COVID-19: We’re ready to go to prison than return to work without our allowance – JOHESU

Medical activities were on Monday paralysed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra state following a 7-day warning strike by Joint Health Sector Unions over non-payment of Covid-19 hazard allowance which the striking workers said federal government had promised them.

Speaking on behalf of the union, Chairman of the NAUTH chapter, Mr Ikenna Anahalu regretted federal government compromise over the agreement reached with the union, saying only some members of the unions were paid 10 percent instead of the agreed 50 percent while many were not paid anything at all.

He said his members have vowed that they would rather go to prison than return to their duty posts until government paid every Kobo owed them.

He said, “There were preferential treatment in the handling of issues that affected the workers’ well-being.

“The federal government must release funds to pay the arrears of differentials for 2015, 2016 and 2017 promotion allowances to their members. They complained that the payment of April and May 2018 were still withheld and said that government had to pay up.

Anahalu who was flanked by his secretary, Charles Nwoye also had Chairmen of other units in the union including Ozoemena Obiora; the Public Relations Officer, Edochie Peter of JOHESU at the health institution, Nwobodo Hygenius, treasurer by his side.
