Covid 19: PDP Condemns Police Brutality in Anambra

The Anambra State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned police brutality in the state which led to the killing of two youths.

The Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Mr Nnamdi Nwangwu in a press statement said the murder of two youths in Nkpor in Idemili North local government area of the state by overzealous policemen is not acceptable.

Nwangwu said that no matter the provocation, the police officers should have been more professional in handling the situation.

The PDP image maker said that it is really paradoxical that the two youths were gruesomely murdered in an attempt to force them to stay at home to avoid the dreaded coronavirus.

“We have one index case of coronavirus in Anambra State, the index patient is said to be in the hospital receiving treatment, convid 19 has not really taken anyone’s life in the state, how can police authorities justify the Nkpor brutal killing. This is a sad development and it is one killing too many on the part of Nigeria Police Force.” He noted.

The PDP Publicity Secretary called for an independent, impartial high powered judicial panel of enquiry to be set up to look into the immediate and remote cause of the brutality with a view of bringing perpetrators to book.

“We have seen on social media how policemen in other climes were driving people off the streets, never did they use life bullets on their people, if people are being killed by policemen in Anambra State in  an attempt to make them free from coronavirus, then, something is critically wrong.” Nwangwu emphasized.

He said PDP is in support of proactive and beneficial protocols prescribed by the federal government and urged the state government which has so far demonstrated ineptitude in the handling of Convid 19 to have recourse to fundamental objectives and directives, principle of state policy which enjoins that governmental actions must be humane aimed at securing the lives and properties of citizens. According to the PDP Image Maker, the foregoing becomes more imperative considering reported cases of police brutality and extortions in Anambra State within these trying times.

Nwangwu who commended the affluent individuals in the state for giving palliatives to the people also enjoined all and sundry to observe the directives by the federal and state government on Convid 19,  noting that the issue of coronavirus should be seen as a serious pendemic situation which calls for utmost carefulness.

“The Anambra State government is advised to rise above partisanship and propaganda stunts, adopt an all inclusive approach like the federal government and most importantly innovate strategies that suit the peculiar and special circumstances of Ndi Anambra and avoid borrowing measures that expose people to avoidable hardship and preventable risks.” He concluded
