CLO hails NIWA boss over resuscitation of moribund Onitsha Port

Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has commended the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Chief Dr. George Muoghalu for keeping his promise of resuscitating moribund Onitsha River Port and reactivating Inland Waters for efficient and effective service delivery.

The Chairman of the body in Anambra,
Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme who stated this in a statement, said the people of the state had thought the promises were mere rhetoric and usual political statement.

He said the NIWA boss has proved that there were still benevolent servant leaders who could fulfill and accomplish their set goals for the citizenry.

The Human Rights activist called on politicians and political class to emulate and live out Muoghalu’s patriotic, selfless, sacrificial and transparent disposition in discharging their duties.

The statement read, “When Chief Dr. Muoghalu was appointed Chairman NIWA on 1st October last year, he promised to resuscitate moribund Onitsha River Port, revitalise and reactive Inland Waters for efficient and effective service delivery and revenue driven and create jobs and wealth for the government and citizenry.

“He reiterated his mandate and mission during his meeting with Onitsha business community and stakeholders early this year when he promised to make Onitsha River Port not only functional but port of final destination for southeast designated containers.

“We thought it is rhetoric and usual political statement. Fortunately, he has proved that there is still benevolent servant leaders who can fulfill and accomplish their set goals for the citizenry.

“Pertinently his recent commissioning of arrival of barges of containers to Onitsha River Port is a dream come true and the best and most cherished and celebrated project to southeast more than forty years it were commissioned by former president Shehu Shagari administion.

“I appeal to Muoghalu to consolidate on the landmark achievement by dredging River Niger to enable ships berth at the port and provision of water tight security in all our waterways.

“He is indeed new face and hope of our dreamed politicians and public servants. It is correct to say that he has proved the assertion of renowned English poet and writer Louis Howe wrong that you cannot be active in politics and be honest and transparent and a friend in government is a friend lost.

“His believes that leadership is to serve and not to be served should be cardinal objective of all leaders.

“I thank President Buhari for his unique wisdom in finding him worthy for NIWA boss and unprecedented support given to Dr. Okonjo Iweala that lead to her emergence as President of World Trade Organisation.

“This has brought tremendous honour, respect and glory to our dear country.

“I reiterate my earlier appeal to FGN to rehabilitate deplorable and decrepit Onitsha-Owerri, 3-3 Otuocha and Onitsha-Enugu roads as Christmas period draws nearer in order to save lives, property and excruciating pains, hardships and sufferings by commuters and road users.
