CHRSJ drags Lagos divisional Police Station before nation’s Police authority

A Police station in Lagos State, Meiran Divisional Police Headquarters in Alimosho Local Government area of the State have been dragged before the police authority over incessant illegal arrest of Nigeria citizens, particularly, the drivers and Okada riders plying the area by the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ).

Forwarding the Petition Letter dated June 8th, 2020 to the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 comprises of Lagos and Ogun States, the centre urged the Police bosses to beam searchlight on the Meiran Divisional Police Station over an alleged heinous actions being perpetrated by the officers and men of the Station against the innocent law abiding citizens of the area.

The Petition Letter signed by CHRSJ’S Executive Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi, Alimi Sulaiman and a copy was also forwarded to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for due diligent investigation into the matter and the copies of the Petition Letter were made available to newsmen on Friday.

The call hinged on the illegal arrest of Mr. Asimiyu Saheed with phone Number:- 08107283465/ 08133893660,by one Police officer called “Ade” attached to the Station over frivolous allegations where they force him (Asimiyu) to sign an undertaken under duress, detailing the matter, CHRSJ disclosed that the offence being alleged to be committed
by Assimiyu(Okada Rider)  was that he took two Make-up Artist  as passengers and one of them was woman friend of Police officer “Ade” of Meiran Divisional Police Station, to an hotel where a man also called himself Theatre Artist, looking for a make-up artist.

After dropping them at the hotel, Asimiyu was going on with his daily business of carrying passengers with his Okada and later called by the Police officer “Ade” that the two hairdressers were tricked by the person that called them for make-up in the hotel, stating that the theatre man collected their phones with trick at the hotel that they should bring their phones in order to show all their works on the phones to his boss in the upstairs of the hotel while staying at the reception and the said man was varnished to the thin air.

In view of this, the Police officer “Ade” told the woman friend hairdresser and her partner to report the matter at their Police Station and the Police would make the Okada man (Asimiyu Saheed) to pay for the lost phones to the tune N80, 000k and the report has it that Asimiyu was arrested between 12th to 14th March, 2020 by detaining him for three days but later released on bail after his family made the payment of bail fees of (N30,000).

While making Asimiyu to sign undertaken under duress that he would pay for the lost of the phones, instead of the police to arrest the owner of the hotel and receptionist for allowing their hotel reception and premises  to be used to defraud the unsuspected members of the public.

Meanwhile, It was alleged that the officers of the Police Station had been known for gross misconduct, violation of human rights, lawlessness and unprofessional conduct over the years because the Police authority in the State had failed to beam searchlight into the Station where innocent citizens were always made to pay for the offence they did not commit.

Recalling that the case of the attempted murder of one Ismaila Danladi WITH Phone number- 07069143172/08053974435 and his friends which the then DPO of the same Meiran Police Station were directed his men to kill them (Danladi and his friend) at the eve of 2018 Christmas festival, but they were divinely survived the Police brutal attacked.

The civil group stated that  Danladi, a 40 year-old man, was illegally arrested along with his friend, Oghadi, on Monday 24th of December, 2018, nearly died from gunshot wounds he sustained in his right leg at the hands of men of the Station who stormed the Okesina Street in the Meiran area, off  the Lagos – Abeokuta express way,  for their illegal duty on the fateful day and for  the saving grace of the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) which was still investigating the Divisional Station on the dastard act.

Also recalled the case of Mr. Akinjisola Anthony Oluwafemi with Phone number:-07055574466, who was illegally arrested by one Police officer Ogun’s with Phone number: – 07037960132,attached to the same Meiran Police division and collected sum of Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000) for the bail, adding that Akinjisola was about to compel to pay
sum of Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N2.5million) before the intervention of the Centtre(CHRSJ) foiled their attempt.
