Bungoma county government has assured needy pupils who sat for their 2022 KCPE exams and got 350 marks and above that they will benefit from full scholarship from the county Treasury.

Addressing members of the press at his office, Bungoma county CECM for Education Dr David Wamamili Wanyonyi said this will not be the only money that will be channelled towards the education scheme.

“The scholarship will only cater for 15 pupils in each ward upon establishment of their real needy status,” he explained.

He has also added that the executive is coordinating with the county assembly and the other needy cases who will not benefit from the scholarship will get bursaries from the ward bursary kitty.

“About Kshs.  4M will be allocated to each ward to cater for bursary,” he said.

The CECM has also disowned the existent information that 8000 pupils benefitted from the County scholarship in 2021 and termed it as misleading.

“The students are too many and their fees was not paid in full, this means that the bloated list cannot be managed by the county treasury which has limited resources,” he added.

However, he reminded those who wish to join vocational training centers that they also have bursaries set aside and they ought to apply.

His sentiments were reiterated by the county Chief officer of Education George Kombo who said the county government is going to re-vet the beneficiaries of the scholarship with the aim of removing fraudulent beneficiaries.

“We are going to do this so that we can remove those who acquired scholarship despite the fact that they are not vulnerable, we intend to do this so that we only remain with the real needy cases,” he said.

Moreover,  Kombo has also clarified that fees for the excess 7000 students was not paid since their was no public participation and it was done by the previous Wangamati regime with a political mentality as election was drawing near.
