BREAKING: Tension as Petrol Tanker crashes at Niger Bridge, spills content

Information reaching THE DAILY VENDOR from Onitsha in Anambra State has it that a petrol laden tanker has crashed at the Niger bridge on Wednesday, May 6.

According to information released to THE DAILY VENDOR by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra command’s spokesperson and Sector Public Education Officer,
RC Pascal A. Anigbo, the tanker laden with petrol was coming from Delta State into Anambra when it’s propeller pulled off and the driver lost control of the vehicle leading to the crash.

It was however learnt that for the protective side rails on the bridge which saved the long vehicle from completely flipping over, the crash would have caused a terrible fire disaster.

RC Anigbo said “Information gathered from eye witnesses confirmed that the said tanker was coming from Delta State into Anambra State and at the boundary into the bridgehead, Onitsha the propeller pulled off from the vehicle and the driver lost control. The vehicle subsequently hit the edge, hanging on the protective side rail and preventing it from tumbling over.”

He however confirmed that the crash which involved a MACK Truck with registration number NKR 41 XA, happened around 8:30am Wednesday, and the two occupants of the vehicle escaped unhurt.

THE DAILY VENDOR learnt that the Ag. Unit Commander of FRSC, Onitsha Unit Command, CRC Isaac O. Komolafe was quick enough to mobilize to the scene of the accident after putting a call through to the Fire Service, who he said responded immediately to salvage the situation.

He confirmed that the FRSC operatives have cordoned off the area and are managing the traffic situation.

“The occupants of the tanker are 2 male adults. They were not injured. Meanwhile, the Ag. Unit Commander FRSC Onitsha Unit Command, CRC Isaac O. Komolafe called the Fire Service, who responded immediately to salvage the situation. FRSC Operatives have cordoned off the area and are managing the traffic,” Anigbo said.

“The Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps Anambra State, CC Andrew A. Kumapayi calls on vehicle owners and drivers, especially articulated vehicles to endeavor to always ensure that their vehicles are in good working condition before embarking on any trip. He advises them to check and service their vehicles regularly to avoid unnecessary and preventable road traffic mishaps.”
