Good news for Dhaka-Kolkata passengers as the only direct train connecting Dhaka-Jessore Benapole ‘Benapole Express’ will resume operations from December 2.
The train service between India and Bangladesh was closed for about a year and a half during the Corona period.
Because of pandemic crisis passengers are subjected to a number of harassments.
India-Bangladesh Land port Chamber Commerce’s Import-Exporting Sub-Committee Chairman Matiar Rahman said: “In the first phase, there will be a Dhaka-Benapole intercity train. Next, there will be a bullet train. Rail cargo service with India will also be launched.”
Benapole Express (Train no. 795-796) is a non-stop intercity train which runs between Dhaka and Benapole. The train connects capital to an important Land port of Bangladesh.
Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh whereas Kolkata is the capital city of Indian state West Bengal.
India and Bangladesh leaderships have been making efforts to enhance transport and connectivity. Every day 5-6 thousand passport holders from remote areas of Bangladesh travel to India through Benapole port.
During the Corona period, the Benapole Express had to face financial loss due to the temporary closure of movements between the two countries. As a result, the train stopped. Few days ago, the Bangladesh government allowed all other trains to run but the Benapole Express was not launched for unknown reasons. As a result, the sick passengers going to India had suffered a lot.
The people of Benapole are elated at the news that direct Dhaka-Benapole route train will resume. Around 6,000 to 7,000 passengers carrying passports will be able to travel to India from rural areas of Bangladesh every day.
