Organised Labour of Anambra State consisting of strong 15 Industrial Unions have pledged to support the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) Candidate, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo in the November governorship election in the state.
Leader of the delegation, Comrade Adigwe Chikwelu who gave the assurance during a Solidarity visit to the APGA flagbearer, urged him to carry the workers along when he becomes governor of the state.
He further appealed to Soludo to maintain the prompt payment of workers’ salary as currently being done by Governor Willie Obiano, urging him to consider possible ways to further improve the workers’ welfare.
“We will also request that you look into the possibility of creating the Ministry of Labour and Productivity as other states in the federation have done as a way of improving government and labour relationship,” he said.
Responding, Soludo who recounted his days as student union activist at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said he shared a common “comradeship” with the Union.
He assured the workers that the focal point of his manifesto was to create wealth through job creations.
He said, “Labour should be a strategic partner in progress, being indifferent is not an option in times of crises. There’s need for constant cooperation at all times between the Organised Labour and government.”
While allaying the Union fears on issues of salaries and emoluments payment, the former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) described regular salary payment as a right of workers and not a favour.
He promised to run an open and very transparent public finance management where anybody within any part of the world could appreciate what comes in and what it is used for.
Earlier, Director-General of APGA Campaign Council and Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu praised the Union for the support and Solidarity to the party flagbearer.
He reminded the body of Governor Obiano’s faithfulness in regular payment of salaries to workers and pensioners, reassured them that Soludo would continue with the tradition and improve significantly on it.
Present at the meeting were the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Primus Odili; Hon Chinedu Obidigwe, Chief Ashia Nbabuife, Mrs Chinwe Orizu Vice-chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Hon. Greg Obi, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Hon Godwin Ibekwe, SSA on Labour Matters and many others.
