Anambra seals hospital, vows to prosecute doctor over quackery

…says it carried out investigations on the hospital’s illegal activities following a tip off

The Anambra State government has sealed a private hospital, St. Norbert Hospital, Amansea, Awka North Local Government of the state over quackery and illegal medical services.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, who disclosed this during a monitoring and compliance exercise with the taskforce team, said the move was targeted at savings residents of the State from untimely death.

He said the ministry carried out investigations on the hospital’s illegal activities following a tip off, adding that the quack doctor and others would be brought to book after investigations were concluded.

He said, “Prior to the investigation, a lot patients have lost their lives at the hospital. We also discovered that the facility was not registered with the state government.

“The state government will make sure that the said quack doctor and others are brought to book as soon as the investigations are completed to save people from untimely death.

“Look at the environment of the facility, it is not health friendly, the wards including the surgical ward are not conducive in terms of cleanliness and necessary medical equipment.

“We are not pleased with the activities of quack healthcare givers in the state and the state government will have intensify efforts to fight quackery in the health system. We will begin to clamp down on illegal healthcare givers.”

According to the Commissioner, Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration was currently working towards strengthening health system to restore people’s confidence in government owned hospitals.

“Parts of the efforts is the plan to institute the Anambra State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency.

” The agency will be responsible for the monitoring of activities of healthcare personnel, hospitals, and as well respond to compliant from the masses on health services offered withing their localities,” he added.
