Anambra govt to organise football, volleyball competitions for corps members

Anambra State government has disclosed plans to mobilize sponsors for football and volleyball competitions for the 2024 Batch ‘A’ Stream II corps members deployed to the state during their 3-weeks orientation camp.

Commissioner for Youth Development, Patrick Agha-mba dropped the hint on Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe, NYSC Unity Permanent Orientation Camp, Umuawulu/Mbaukwu during the opening ceremony of the orientation course for corps members.

He said the competition was targeted at fishing out outstanding players among the corps members as well as showcase the state as NYSC friendly.

“The youth ministry plans to mobilize sponsors of the 2024 Batch ‘A’ Stream II finals of football and volleyball in this camp.

“In addition to fishing out corps members who are good at football and volleyball, the event will ultimately showcase the state as NYSC friendly. We look forward to that grand finale,” he said.

According to the Commissioner, corps members’ acceptance to serve the nation had invariably thrown another challenge to the government as stakeholders to do the needful to ensure they experienced glorious memories during and after the service year.

He enjoined the corps members to pay keen attention to every aspect of the orientation exercise, stressing that the lessons learnt would be of immense benefit both during the service year and beyond.

He said, “I assure you that the good people of Anambra are hospitable, friendly and accommodating. You might have started having an atmosphere of conviviality and warmth in and around this orientation camp.

“This is a clear indication of acceptability and resounding welcome. Within the camping period, you will witness some eminent personalities from the state who would be breezing in intermittently to show that they care.

“Besides, all the traditional rules, community leaders, faith based organizations and youth bodies have been duly sensitized of your presence and the role you would play during the period of primary and secondary assignments.

“My dear patriots, be assured that they would give you maximum support to not only relax and do your utmost at your places of primary assignment but equally assist you in searching for and carrying out both group and personal community development projects to uplift the living standard of the rural communities.”

Earlier, State Coordinator, Mrs Blessing Iruma revealed that a total of 1,702 corps members, comprising 770 males and 932 females were deployed to the state.

Describing the corps members as special, Iruma expressed joy that they were quickly adjusting to the camp environment as well as participating in camp activities.

“It is equally heart warming to state that their level of discipline so far is impressively high. I, therefore encourage them to maintain the positive disposition.

“It is essential to state that the orientation course which you have started is designed to give you insight into the operations of the scheme. It is equally meant to prepare you for a successful service year.

“Additionally, the orientation exercise will equip you with leadership, physical, mental training as well as Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development,” she added.
