Anambra family petitions CP over son’s death, demands justice

Family of late Ikechukwu Onuorah of Edeke Isseke in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Mr John Abang over the death of their son reported on August 15, 2020 by the police.

The family, through its Counsel, Okenna Odigbo and Co., said the deceased, resident of Ogboro Umunwaji, Ihiala, reportedly left Awka for Nnewi on Friday, August 14, 2020 and boarded a bus for Ihiala at about 8:00 pm but did not arrive home alive.

It called on the CP to intervene over the matter to ensure justice was done.

The petition said several calls placed on the deceased phones were not picked nor returned.

“A police officer allegedly in custody of Ikechukwu’s phone later picked up the call and told the caller that Ikechukwu was in police cell. Two callers received the same response to the deceased’s whereabouts.

“The same police officer the next day, August 15 told the people looking for Ikechukwu that he (Ikechukwu) had an accident and was admitted to a hospital. It was further declared to the family members that Ikechukwu had died the previous day.”

The family in the petition wondered why the police officer in the first place claimed that Ikechukwu was in the police cell but later turned around to say that he died in an accident.

“Why were we not contacted with the deceased’s phone line since it was said to be in the custody of the police officer?

“How can late Ikechukwu Onuorah die in a road accident when the scene or portion of road the said car accident as claimed by the said police officer is under construction by a road maintenance agency and is blocked to traffic as no vehicle plies on that portion of the road? ” the family querried.

The family alleged that the deceased and one of his co-tenant who allegedly threatened to deal with him had been at war before his death, a situation that ocassioned the petition to the CP over the threat to life.
